About “nightlife cities.” [part 1]
What happens with the economy when the economists are sleeping?
Nightlife Cities is a citizen’s guide to night-time economics, written for those who want to understand how the economy works at night but have no interest in conventional jargon or equations. I explain the general principles underlying different urban economic ideas: leisure industry, assemblage urbanism, deindustrialization, etc. In straightforward language, show how to critique municipal policies regarding the incentives they create, rather than the goals they proclaim.
With clear explanations of the entire field, from urbanization and the rise and fall of the alcohol industry to the international developed cities, this is the interesting book for anyone who wishes to understand how the night-time economy functions.
This book is not an introduction to city life but more about an interesting aspect of urban economics. Securely, you can enjoy and learn a lot from this book.
Every city science lover knows that cities are essential because cities and regions have become the economic growth engines because of the clustering force. The physicist Richard Feynman supposedly once said: “if you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics.” I fell the same about the way night-time economy: otherwise, if we think we understand urban economics without night-time economy, we don’t understand the urban economy. The night-time economy is increasingly being recognised as a driver of economic growth.
Cities can increase their productivity by adopting measures that regulate and diversify the array of social and economic activities during the night. The night-time economy is a source of employment and additional revenue for local governments.
This book was written in a relaxed, journalistic style. It offers useful, practical tips from a wide range of leading scientists and experts on how to get on better in modern urban life, particularly in a night-time. This Nightlife Cities is set out in five sections. The first three sections deal with different theoretical scenarios that occur in all countries. The last two section deals with practical notes that help in navigating such development scenarios.
Cities always remain energetic, even during the day. Yet a different form of vigour wave hits the city when the night dawns upon it. The nightclubs throng with the party animals, amazing cocktails line up the bar deck, and hands can be seen raised in the air. Even the statues and buildings become “lit” in the night. But clubbing and partying are not the only things people enjoy cities nightlife. It is a chance again to think about the economy.
This book summarises the main results of existing literature on the night-time economy and present cities unified manner. For this purpose, I have two goals in this book: to inform the reader about advances in our scientific understanding of night-time economy and to show how much scientific knowledge can help us make the science of our politics. Second give information about some concepts in assemblage urbanism, leisure industry, and urban development. A fundamental posit of the book is that the Nightlife Cities is just the latest trend catchphrase capturing a spectrum of flexible urban economy transformation and arrangements that have existed before in one form or another. The purpose of this book is to explain concisely to a non-specialist readership what is meant by the “the night-time economy,” how it operates and what implications it poses for the workers and businesses that work within its confines, and what issues it raises for the broader economy and policymakers. Creating a safe, vibrant and well-balanced evening and night-time offer is a challenge. Still, with fantastic growth potential, more and more local partnerships are finding unique and innovative ways to approach the task. Effective management of a place’s evening and night-time economy is quickly becoming a priority in the majority of locations across Europe. People are starting realizing that sustainable economic prosperity can only be achieved by taking a holistic approach to the management of a place and understanding our town and city centres don’t have to close at 6 pm.
